Mrs. Cassel's Home Page
I am the art teacher for O.R. Edgington and Union Elementaries. I have been teaching in both schools for 13 years.
Rules of my room:
1. Try your best.
2. Listen to the teacher and other students.
3. Share ALL materials politely.
4. Follow directions the first time.
5. Use a quiet voice.
6. Do your own work.
7. Follow all other school rules.
Consequences for not following the rules:
first time: warning
second time: name on the board. I have the student write their own name on the board.
third time: check mark. A note or call home to parent/guardian. I ask that a note be signed and returned so I know that the information reaches parents/guardians.
fourth time: student assigned detention or removed from class. I rarely have these situations.
Rewards for following the rules:
1. Praise.
2. We have fun doing our work and learning during class.
3. Points for my contest. The class in 1-3 and 4-6 with the most points at the end of the year gets a special treat from me.
4. Smiles.
5. Sixth graders also work for points in order to be able to do a tie-dye project at the end of the year. I require 250 points by the end of the week after spring break. That boils down to at least 8 points per week of art.
Materials:
I only use washable tempera paints. Watercolors, which we also use, do not come in a washable variety. I do provide art shirts for the students to cover their clothing. These may not prevent accidents but they do provide some protection.
All other materials are pretty much washable. They may, however, require stain treatment. One thing that I have found for myself that gets out a lot of different stains is something called Krud Kutter. I get it at Home Depot. It is expensive for a gallon jug, but it cleans many things including getting spray paint overspray off of skin and carpet.
Over the course of the year we use a wide variety of materials from crayons to clay to create projects from drawings to prints to sculptures. Each student is exposed to proper use and care of all the materials we use. All of the materials we use are paid for by a portion of the student fees that are paid every year. I try to buy the best quality for the best price, so that all money I spend is used wisely and for projects that are meaningful.
Art Days: Find your child's teacher's name and that will tell you the day your child has art.
